How to work a Canal Staircase Lock as we visit Chester by Narrowboat.
We visit Chester on the Shropshire Union Canal by narrowboat and explain how to work a canal staircase lock. We need to climb out of the city using the Northgate Locks, a three-rise staircase lock raising us over 32 feet from Telford's Warehouse at Tower Wharf to the city centre. Colin uncovers the story of the collapsing water tower, the lock-keeper's cottage with an unusual sewerage system, and a rare lengthsman's hovel by the cricket pitch.


Narrowboat OUT OF CONTROL on Mersey Crossing!
Our narrowboat is swept out of control on our Mersey crossing as a freaky current takes hold of us in Eastham Lock. We leave Liverpool's Salthouse Dock heading back over the Mersey Estuary towards Ellesmere Port and the National Waterways Museum. We get a visit from the RNLI Lifeboat as we cross the busy River Mersey during the annual Royal Mersey Yacht Club Regatta, and we have a go at stand-up paddleboarding!


RISKY! Narrowboat across the DANGEROUS River Mersey!
We take a risky trip, taking our narrowboat across the dangerous River Mersey on an iconic journey to Liverpool. We're joined by Fran & Rich from Floating our Boat as we leave our mooring at Sutton Weaver to the end of the Weaver Navigation and through Marsh Lock on to the Manchester Ship Canal. We navigate through Eastham Lock, the biggest on the canal before beginning our crossing of the notoriously dangerous tidal Mersey Estuary to Brunswick Dock and the Port of Liverpool.


Working the LAST Surviving Steam-Powered Mersey Tug!
We join the crew working the last surviving steam-powered Mersey tug, the Daniel Adamson, more affectionately known as the Steamship Danny (previously known as the Ralph Brocklebank) as she returns along the Manchester Ship Canal from Liverpool, back to her home mooring at Sutton Weaver on the Weaver Navigation. We leave our mooring at Devil's Garden and continue down the River Weaver to what remains of Sutton Locks, the secret boat graveyard where boats go to die.
